Nimbus Founders Sign On To ODC's Rebirth
Following its September acquisition of the mastering activities of Unaxis Nimbus Ltd., Optical Disc Corp. (ODC) announced an agreement with the original founders of Nimbus Technology - Gerald Reynolds, Jonathan Halliday, Adrian Farmer and Antony Smith - that secures their long-term commitment to both the technical and commercial rebirth of the company.
The newly named ODC Nimbus, with offices in Santa Fe Springs , Calif. , Monmouth , U.K. and Hong Kong , will be responsible for the support of all current ODC customers as well as all Nimbus offline and Pi equipment.
The combined entity brings together two formerly competitive technologies: ODC's dye-polymer based DRAW (Direct Read After Write) mastering, and the photoresist mastering method which Nimbus has long supported. The company said it anticipates that it will maintain its existing product ranges, "and fully exploit the opportunity arising from the union of these different but complementary technologies."
ODC Nimbus added that its primary R&D objective will be the development of a mastering system for Blu-ray and HD DVD. "It's good to be back. We have unfinished business in the optical disc industry," said Farmer, who serves as one of ODC Nimbus' two directors of sales and marketing. "In combination we have a powerful technology base from which we can jointly bring to fruition mastering concepts for the next generation of formats. We greatly look forward to re-establishing personal contact with our customers."
ODC itself was acquired in April by Dubilier & Co., a private equity firm. Dubilier's James Wu serves as company president, while Halliday serves as research director, with Reynolds as development director, Smith as sales and marketing director and Tony Holden as COO.
